Battle of Hunain
Thaqif was the ruling tribe at Ta'if where once Muhammad (SAW) had gone to preach islam. They had stoned him and wounded him seriously.
Between Makkah and Ta'if lived another tribe called Hawazin. Both the tribes were strong and fighters. The conquest of Makkah and the distruction of the idols made them very unhappy. They decided to attack the Muslims .After the peaceful victory over Makkah , the messenger of Allah (prophet saw) stayed there for few days.
As he was preparing to go back madina , he received information about the approaching enemy. He mobilized the Muslims and an army of 12,000 pressed onward to the valley of Hunain, a place between Makkah and Ta,if about six kilometres from the plain of Arafat. The valley of Hunain was surrounded by mountains and the Muslims were to pass through a marrow passage to go to the valley. The archers of the enemy hid themselves in the mountain pass.
When the Muslims army entered the pass, the enemy shot a volley of arrow. The surprise attack made the Muslims panic and they started running for shelter. Archers of the enemy made them flee from the scene . The Prophet (SAW) faced the situation with courage and fortitude. In rhe midst of firece onslaught from all directions, he faced the enemy with unparalleled resoluteness and valor. He summoned his companions and there was immediate response.
The fleeing soldiers came back and gathered around him. They attacked the enemy with such a fury that their opponents, despite their best efforts could not withstands the thrust. Within no time the army that had overwhelmed the Muslims with the bruth force of shooting arrows was now on the rum in panic. They fled from the battleground. The Muslims were crowned with complete victory. This armed encounter claimed the lives of 70 pagans whereas six Muslims received martyrdom. A booty consisted of 6,000 prisoners, 44,000 camels,40,000 goats and sheeps etc.was fetched.
