Why is the scholarship jacket so important to Martha?

The story is about a fifteen years old girl Marta who was a student of Texas School . It was the tradition of the school to award a scholarship Jacket to the student who maintained the highest grades for eight years.The Jacket bore a big gold S on the left front and the student name was written in gold letters on the pocket.Marta farther was a farm labrourer.Their financial position was not good.
It as Marta Keen desire to win the scholarship Jacket. She expected to win it because because she had Maintain an A plus average in her eight years of school.But her hopes dashed to the ground when she overheard a conversation between two teachers of her school about the position holder.
Mr. shmidt, the history teacher, wanted that the scholarship jacket should be given to Marta who acually deserved it. Mr.Boone, the Math teacher, on the other hand,favoured Joanne whose father was not only a member of the Board but also owned the only store in the town. This Made Marta very sad. She concluded that she would fail in winning the sholarship Jacket which she wanted most.That night she wept bitterly into her pillow so that she might not be heard.
The next day,Marta was called by the principal to his office. He told her that this year ther had been a change in the policy regarding the scholarship jacket.
He said that according to the decision of the Board, the school would receive fifteen dollars for the scholarship Jacket from the winner. He informed her that if the winner could not pay for it , the jacket would be given to the runner-up.
Marta went home very sad. She went straight to her grandfather who was working in the feld. She informed him of the new policy of the School and asked for fifteen dollars. Marta was heartbroken when her grandfather refused to pay fifteen dollars for the scholarship Jacket.
He told her that she must not pay for anything she had earned through her own efforts.
The next day, Marta went to the principal office and told him what her grandfather had told her about the Scholarship jacket. She added through unwillingly that the jacket should be given to Joann,the runner. At this the principal realized his guilt. He told Marta that she would receive the Scholarship jacket. This made her very happy. She thanked the principal and came out of his room jofully.
